Making the case for Self Care
Demonstrating the value of self care is not an easy task. It is not that there are not enough good reasons for encouraging self care, it is that the topic is so vast that it is hard to know where to start... and when to stop!

That is why we have done the hard work for you and uploaded some new resources on Self Care Connect that will help you to make the case for self care - whether you work in a self care related field or need to raise the funds for a self care programme.

We've researched self care policy documents, reports and case studies to develop a list of facts and statistics all of which make a compelling argument for the importance of self care.

We have also turned the spotlight onto some key conditions highlighting where self care is known to make a difference in prevention of disease or in the long term management of a condition both for the people they affect and health services that support them. In particular, we look at asthma, diabetes, obesity, mental health and cancer. We also include figures that demonstrate the cost effectiveness of self care initiatives.

The resource is available as a downloadable Word file and can be found here. A shorter media factsheet and Powerpoint slide presentation that you can download and adapt for any presentations you may give on self care will be available soon.

Of course, this is just the top of the iceberg and we would welcome any statistics and evidence that you can share with us on the impact of self care initiatives. They don't have to be national or international figures or reports - case studies of your locally implemented initiatives are just as valuable as they demonstrate the impact that self care can have at a local level and may be just the example that one of the Self Care Connect visitors is looking for to make their case for self care.

Hurry... don't miss out on self care commissioning workshops

There are only a few places left for the Commissioning Self Care Workshops: From Concept to Reality taking place across England between April and June this year.

Workshops are taking place in Leeds, Cambridge, Newbury, Taunton, Leicester, Birmingham, London and Gatwick.

The day-long workshops - designed for Directors of Public Health, Directors of Commissioning and Commissioners for LTCs - are free and will provide a clear understanding of the self care support services available locally and how to commission them effectively.

Details of the workshops and other events on self care are available on the Events page on Self Care Connect. Click here to find out more.
