Chapter 14
Tools to help you plan and
support self care

Tool 17

Check out whether self care support is a priority for training and whether the way in which you plan to learn about it is appropriate

Why you should use this

If promoting and supporting self care is a new priority for you and/or your PCT or practice, you will need to update your personal development plan and the PCT/ practice business plan.

When to use this

When you are checking out the extent to which promoting and supporting self care is a priority for the PCT or practice you work in; and your current knowledge and skills, to deduce what resources for development you need for your future role.

What to do

Interested individuals should complete the self-assessment on pp. 218–20.

How it works (insight)

It is a structured way to evaluate the extent to which knowledge and skills are required for a new role, and to weight their importance against other learning and service development needs.

Whom to engage

The self-assessment form should be useful for any member of staff where changes are happening such that their role will be affected.

How much time you should allow

Fifteen minutes upwards depending on the degree to which homework is required to collect information about PCT/practice policies and plans, to score current knowledge and skills, or to discuss perception of what is required with a mentor, supervisor or line manager.

What a facilitator should do

Take time to encourage individuals to complete the self-assessment form and discuss their identified learning needs with their line manager or other, and plan/pursue learning activities.

What to do next

Work with educational lead or trainer in the PCT/practice to distribute the selfassessment learning needs form in organised way. Encourage someone to collate completed forms and plan learning events to meet needs. Link into the personal development planning/appraisal process of the PCT or practice.

What makes it work better

Plenty of resources to meet learning and service development needs!

What can go wrong

Individuals completing the forms according to their ‘wants’ rather than their PCT’s or practice’s service needs.
