Self Care for You and Self Care for Primary Care

Providing the skills and advice to help people to engage in self care is crucial to empowering people to improve their lifestyle and develop positive health behaviours. Two training programmes have been developed to support these aims: Self Care for You focused on members of the public and Self Care for Primary Care, a training resource for health professionals.

Self Care for You is a self care skills training course made up of six flexible activities. Each activity is designed to last one hour and 20 minutes. These activities will introduce participants to a variety of ways to self care and outlines theories relevant to self care. The short activities and discussions will help them to apply new learning to their own personal experiences and help them make important changes to their health behaviours. These courses can be run by employers, health professionals and voluntary organisations, using the resources available from this site.

After experiencing the course, the participants feel more confident to manage short-term conditions and minor health problems. It promotes people to be actively engaged with their own health and wellbeing and the appropriate usage of health and social services.

Self Care for You has made a difference to people’s lives. People have reported feeling more confident and trying new things that they wouldn't have felt that they could try before like losing weight, giving up smoking and going on to further education. You can see the impact that the course has made by watching a short video on the Self Care for You course carried out with Bradford City Council Parks Team here.

NHS Working In Partnership Programme Self Care for You Project in the North West March 2008 - April 2009 Final Report (October 2009)

The Project Evaluation Report compiled by NHS North West covered 5 PCTs over a 12 month period and was funded by WiPP to expand the work of the national pilot. Report written by S. Summers and Y. McGlinchey NHS North West.

Self Care for Primary Care is a programme designed to encourage health professionals to learn to promote self care and introduce self care interventions for common health conditions in their patients.

The training programme is aimed at both PCTs (and social care organisations) and general practice including pharmacy teams as a route to developing a culture where promoting and supporting self care is integral to every aspect of the healthcare and services the team provide. The programme provides distinct resources for both of these groups.

General Practice - As a result of this programme, the team will be aware of the evidence for supporting self care, knowing what works and what is worth trying.

It will also help a practice to ensure that they are well coordinated when it comes to self care support so that everyone is giving out similar advice and thinking of all aspects of a person’s health. This might be by preventing a condition arising in the first place, by helping them manage their condition themselves as far as they are able, with treatments they can buy over the counter or initiate themselves, or by living with the symptoms until they improve spontaneously or tolerating them as part of every day life.

There are three workshops as part of the programme to take place over 6-12 months to help develop, assess and review the roll out of a self care strategy. Tools and resources for use in these workshops and beyond are provided.

A number of patient pathways for common conditions that benefit from self care are available. These provide an example of how to ensure that self care plays a role in the management of conditions such as a sore throat, asthma, otitis media or mild depression.

PCT or Social Care Organisation – the programme provides resources and tools to enable the organisation to develop a series of high level working groups to ensure that Self Care is integral to future direction of the organisation.

There are three workshops as part of the programme to take place over 6 – 12 months to help develop, assess and review the roll out of an organisational wide strategy for Self Care.
